Cruise Director Questions
How do you become and Emerald Cruises Cruise Director, what’s the best thing about working on Europe’s rivers, and which itinerary would Cruise Director Nina van Loon advise, we ask her all that and more, below.
1. Where are you from?
I’m from a very small village in the Southern part of the Netherlands, called Ossenisse, but now I live in The Hague.
2. How long have you worked for Emerald Cruises?
3. How did you become a Cruise Director?
I started working on the rivers in 2011 through an internship with my University. I have worked in the industry since 2015 and crossed paths with Emerald Cruises who believed in me and supported me, giving me the opportunity to show myself in this new role.
4. What are your main responsibilities?
To make sure that my guests are happy and that I, together with the crew on-board the Emerald Cruises Star-Ships, provide them with unforgettable memories to look back on. I also entertain the guests, make sure that everything runs smoothly both on-board and onshore and work on creating a wonderful relationship between crew and guests.
5. What do you enjoy most about your job?
Being with the guests, learning from them and experiencing their voyage through their eyes. Also, the organisation behind the scenes and the traveling. Meeting new people from all different parts of the world and hearing their life stories, gives me motivation in life.
6. What’s the most challenging part of your job?
If we have delays or deviation. Low or high water, locks out of order or anything like that.
7. Which is your favourite Emerald Cruises itinerary?
Splendours of Europe, from Amsterdam to Budapest, Highlights of the Netherlands & the Beauty of Belgium and the Charms of Holland & Belgium.
8. Which included excursion from this itinerary would you advise guests don’t miss?
My favourite city on this stretch of Europe, is Budapest. The city tour of Budapest gives the guests a proper insight into the history and culture of the city.
9. How would you best explain the river cruising experience to someone who has never tried it?
I always tell the guests that it is much more than just river cruising, you become part of a new family. It is the full package, from traveling, to culinary experiences and meeting new friends (sometimes for life). You’ll see incredible cities and towns for yourself, learning as you go.
10. How is river cruising different from ocean cruising?
It’s much more personal and exciting, you really get to know each other. Guests with guests and crew with guests. Plus, every day we dock in a beautiful, central location, something that ocean cruisers can’t do.
11. How do you relax while you’re on-board?
I like to keep active and go for a run or to the gym. Not forgetting, a glass of wine in the evening.
